FOUND PHOTOGRAPHS III - EAST RED // RED EAST - Old Studio Portraits from Shanghai

Introduction

Series of altered anonymous family photographs found on a street market in Shanghai in 2013 - RED EAST or EAST RED are names of well known period photo studios - concept/idea is to look at the images from their backside, conceiving of them as an unaccessible, sealed off land, that keeps disappearing in the distance with only some brief scribbles remaining.

DECOMPOSITION / Ukraine Crimea Crisis 2014

Introduction

Trying to respond to the current Crimea Crisis this symbolic color series of 12 images is a further elaboration on the black and white silkscreen series, extract of thousands of lost and decayed negatives from the Sowjet Era that I found 2010 in Western Ukraine

FOUND PHOTOGRAPHS II - COLD WAR IN A TRASH BAG, Ukraine 2010

Introduction

Anonymous found b/w footage (approx. 10 000 negatives) from the Cold War Period in Vinnitsa/Ukraine, that I discovered in 2010 and appropriated in various ways (artist books, slideshow, limited silkscreen series etc.). For books look up http://printedmatter.org/ or www.blurb.com.

PROJ. 1378/1378 - NARBE DEUTSCHLAND TRANSFORMATIONS

Introduction

PROJECT 1378/1378 or 3 SECOND SERIES is a photographic derivative of the film installation NARBE DEUTSCHLAND (967 min, 2008-2014), initially developed to complement the film's world premiere in China in 2014 (Being3 Gallery/Beijing). Reminiscent of the early experiments of decoding time and space by Eadweard Muybridge (1830-1904), each composition uses approx. 80 individual film frames (24/s), translating the fleeting film format into its static photographic counterpart. Rhythms and patterns become visible that usually go unnoticed, hinting at secret codes and formulas behind the profane surface. The project's title refers to the 1378 km length of the Iron Curtain that was dividing Germany for 28 years (size 110 x 174 cm, Ed. 1/1 + 1 artist proof).

Here we see 30 images of the first 20 minutes of the film, covering 1 km each.

POSITIONINGS IV: UNEARTHING FORT IX, 2005

POSITIONINGS IV: UNEARTHING or THE INVENTION OF THE HOLOCAUST

The Holocaust as we know it began in Lithuania with mass shootings. Photographic POSITIONING (AUFSTELLUNG) of the largest successful Jewish mass escape during WW II when about 60 prisoners escaped from Fort IX in Kaunas/Lithuania in the night of December 25, 1943, led by 20 year old Alex Faitelson (Bravery and Heroism in Lithuania 1941-1943). On-site installation since 2008 at Fort IX, 3 meter x 12 meter (www.unearthing-project.org) - incl. the figures of my father, my uncle and myself (variation on Dante's Divine Comedy - going into Hades)

POSITIONINGS III: FATHERPICTURES, Germany, 2002/04

Introduction

Appearances & Observations: the series 'Fatherpictures' re-enacts childhood memories while working through the Uncanny and the topic of German 'Silence' in the upbringing after the war. Figures are silicon/papermachee mock-ups.

BITTER FIELD, East Germany, 1999-2003

Introduction

When the wall fell, the city of Bitterfeld in East-Germany was the negative symbol of polluted and neglected East-German industrial landscape. This series documents the last phase of the deconstruction - and transformation process. Dreamlike glimpses of a past that is disappearing behind the faceless new.

8x10 portraits from a series aken in Berlin/Germany and Ireland (girl in red dress) between 1986/87.

POSITIONINGS I: SWIMMERS, 1984/86

Introduction

Portraits from public German Swimming Pools, photographed mainly in the city of Hamburg between 1984 and 1986. This series I see as my first concrete attempt to confront aspects of German 'Silence' and the 'ghosts of our history' - Strangers as Stand-Ins for personal motivated first POSITIONINGS (Aufstellungen), portraying emotions such as fear, ignorance, helplessness, abuse, self-conquest.

Statements

Artist Statement
For a substantial number of years I have been absorbed working through conflicted German history - my country's history - drawn to look for and confront my own invisible roots within this context. Federico Fellini once said: "We have to look for our roots, they are the only thing we have." No easy task for any German. Door openers into our wrong psychological make up are books by Arno Gruen - the world we construct is upside down, built on wrong values.
